The title Lost and Found could be an appropriate choice for a range of music styles or characters, some, perhaps, quite upbeat and cheerful. This duet, however, was completed during the Covid-19 pandemic and is (not surprisingly) quite a bit darker.The title actually comes from a line written by the English poet and Anglican clergyman John Newton in 1772: “I once was lost, but now am found, was blind, but now I see.” These words, of course, are best known from the first stanza of the most famous of all folk hymns, Amazing Grace. Lost and Found, while written as a single movement, has four easily discerned sectons. The short introducton marked “anxious, nervous” is followed by a highly rhythmic, driven, and almost obsessive section marked“agitated, angry.” This is followed by the contrastng lost and floating character of “adrift, searching,” which then brings us to the final passage, a peaceful and comfortng secton marked “like a prayer.”
